Irish culture and literature can be a creative and meaningful way for Erasmus+ teachers to practise English while discovering Dublin’s literary heritage.
An abecedarium, sometimes called an ABC, is a collection of words arranged in alphabetical order. Each word helps explain a topic, idea or story.
During one week at ISI Dublin, a group of Erasmus+ teachers created an abecedarium while studying Irish history, culture and literature. The project focused on the life and work of the Irish writer, poet and Nobel Prize winner William Butler Yeats, also known as W. B. Yeats.
The group explored words connected to Yeats, Irish literature and the cultural material presented to visitors at the National Library of Ireland. This made the activity a creative way to learn about Irish culture while practising English in a meaningful context.
Irish culture and literature course Dublin
This type of classroom project helps teachers and Erasmus+ participants use English to discuss culture, literature, history and personal interpretation. Instead of only reading about a topic, participants can connect new vocabulary with real places, writers and cultural experiences in Dublin.
For many international teachers, studying in Ireland is also a chance to discover Dublin’s literary heritage. The city has strong connections with writers such as W. B. Yeats, James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, Samuel Beckett and Bram Stoker. You can also learn more about why many participants choose to study in Dublin as part of their teacher training experience.
